Adventure education – Ofsted report

The report specifically focuses on outdoor education centres. Her Majesty Inspectors seek to find in schools good practice and unique contribution to enhance personal and social development in pupils through Adventure Education and for pupils to embrace different outdoor activities. In schools they try to do a variety of outdoor and residential visits, field work, outdoor pursuits and outward bound activities. Reports by HMI reported that in variety of settings, in school grounds, daily visits to outdoor educational centres and residential sites promotes a diverse learning environment. The qualities and range of activities that are available to promote learning are FAB!

Main Findings

Outdoor education gives depth to the curriculum and makes an important contribution to student’s physical, social and personal education. Not all students benefit from such opportunities. Generally the quality of teaching in both outdoor education and school based settings are good. The weaker teaching sites focus on the activity itself rather than what the activity contributes to the students learning. This weaker teaching can be seen in school base settings and is often due to limitations in either accommodation, resources or the teachers own insecurities in subject knowledge.  The quality of teaching in outdoor centres can be seen better in a small based environment because of small group sizes, teacher specialist knowledge and their ability to change tasks to adapt and challenge appropriate students. Outdoor centres give students a good opportunity to engage in self- assessment however any other assessments such as an exam is not suitable as overall outcome of the students is due to personal and social development.

Morning Happy Campers,

Its time to drag out those sleeping bags, grab your touch as we have a lovely stroll down memory lane. Its time to look back on those lovely outdoor adventures that have giving us such thrills and excitement!
One experience that sticks out in mind was a week trip to Glynn Pardon in North Wales which involved:
Gorge scrambling- wellies were definitely a must surprisingly
Rock climbing and bouldering
Abseiling- which made me realise I don't have vertigo
Hill walking- Proud to say I've conquered Snowdonia
Sea level traversing- It was here I realised that I'm a massive fan on Spandau Ballet- GOLD!

Right kids, must dash... got to find these picture.
Stay Safe and Stay Gold!

I have slept in a tent once in my whole life; this was in my friend's garden. With very limited experience of outdoor adventurous activities one experience I really enjoyed was a PGL camp acting as a team leader for younger students on the trip. Activities I took part in were:
- orienteering
- zip wire
- abseiling
- rock climbing
- quad biking
Gemma Hitchcock :)

Throughout my life I have had many outdoor experiences! I have been skiing 5 times to numerous locations, doing red and black slopes as well as jumps! I have also been sailing and kayaking on holiday as well as paragliding! I have also been camping with the family and have been on lots of long walks along the beach!

Mel Keenan

Throughout school I participated in the Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh where I had to do a 24 hour orienteering expedition in a group of 6. We had to erect a tent and navigate our way from point A to B which over a period of 2 days, equalled a total of 40 miles. It was hard work but I learnt to be organised.

I have been Skiing four times, going to destinations that include Andorra, France, Switzerland and Austria. It was great fun!

In year 6, I went to the Isle of Wight where I participated in a bunch of adventurous activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, go-karting and caving.

Rochelle Oxley: Though out my college education, I have taken part in the following OOA activities:

-          Bouldering

-          Rock Climbing

-          Kayaking

-          Archery

-          Tunnelling

-          Small problem solving actives

-          Abseiling

-          Block climbing

-          Orienteering

-          Mountaineering

I got a lot of experience out of these activities and gained a lot of self-confidence, communication, decision making, team cohesion and problem solving. I feel I gained these skills due to these activities I have taken part in, especially when I did mountaineering and when I faced different problems and working out how to overcome them.
